Why teach reading in high school? Let's ask the kids!
The first few days of school just seem to fly by! Students in the Read 180 classes will be working on building a learning community, getting to know each other, and setting personal goals. Here’s what some of last year’s students had to say about reading. I can’t wait to hear from this year’s kids!
“I want to become a way better reader. I also wanna know what happens in the stories I read.”
“My goal is to read better.”
“My goal in reading is just to become a better reader so everyday life will become easier.”
“My goal is to read out loud.”
When asked why literacy is important in the “real world”, they said:
“To fill out important papers and you’ve got to be able to read signs.”
“. . .like applying for a job”
“. . .shopping, texting, surfing the internet.”
“If you don’t know how to read, you will not get anywhere in life.”
